# Bangkok airport taxi scams: Suvarnabhumi vs Don Mueang arrival traps

**The blunt answer:** Bangkok airport taxi scams are predictable and avoidable. The two real ones are (1) the "limo" desks inside arrivals charging 4x the metered fare, and (2) drivers who refuse the meter once you're in the car. The fix is the same at both airports: use the public taxi rank, insist on the meter, walk away if they refuse.

## The five scams you'll actually encounter

  - **The "limo" desk swap.** Touts inside arrivals direct you to "official" limo counters quoting 1,200–1,500฿ for a trip that should be 350–450฿ on the meter. The desks are real businesses, the price is real, but it's 4x what a metered taxi costs.

  - **"Meter broken."** You get in a taxi, ask for the meter, the driver waves you off and quotes a flat 800–1,000฿. Get out. Take the next taxi. The meter is never broken — it's a refusal to use it.

  - **Tollway padding.** Driver takes the expressway (fine) but quotes inflated tolls (200–300฿) at the end. Real tolls from BKK to central Bangkok are ~70฿. Pay the real amount and don't argue further.

  - **The "hotel closed" routine.** Driver claims your hotel is closed / under construction / unsafe, and offers a different hotel (where they earn commission). Insist on going to your booked address.

  - **The Grab cash-cancel.** Some Grab drivers ask to cancel the trip and pay cash. Don't. The in-app price is the price; cancelling loses you fare protection.

## Suvarnabhumi (BKK) — what to do

Skip the limo desks on the arrivals level. Go to **Level 1, exit gates 4 or 7**, the public taxi rank. There's a ticket machine — take a slip, walk to the numbered bay, hand the slip to the driver. Insist "meter please." Total cost to central Bangkok: 250–450฿ meter + 50฿ airport surcharge + ~70฿ tolls.

For Grab: go to **Level 4** (departures level), follow signs to the ride-hailing pickup zone. Better pickup logistics than Level 1.

## Don Mueang (DMK) — what to do

DMK has metered taxi ranks outside Terminal 1 (Gate 8) and Terminal 2 (Gate 12). Same routine: ticket-machine slip, queue, meter. Total to central Bangkok: ~300–500฿ all-in.

Touts at DMK are noticeably more aggressive than at BKK. They'll follow you across the terminal offering "best price." The answer is "no thank you" and continue walking to the official rank.

## What we'd do at both airports

Ignore everyone with a clipboard or a paper sign inside arrivals. Walk straight to the public taxi rank or upstairs to the Grab pickup zone. If a driver refuses the meter, get out without arguing — there are 50 more behind them.
