# Bangkok Suvarnabhumi vs Don Mueang: which airport is easier to leave?

## Why Suvarnabhumi is easier

BKK's Airport Rail Link runs from the basement of the terminal directly to Phaya Thai (BTS interchange) in about 26 minutes for 45 baht. The metered taxi rank is on Level 1, ticket-machine queue, with surcharges that are well-known and enforced (50฿ airport fee + tolls). Grab pickup is on Level 4, signed in English. The system is mature.

## Why Don Mueang is more annoying

DMK's main public-transport option is the A1/A2 bus to the MRT, which is slow and not designed for tourists with luggage. The new SRT Red Line train (since 2021) helps but only connects to Bang Sue, not central Bangkok. Metered taxis are available outside Terminal 1 and 2, but the rank is less organised than BKK and touts inside arrivals are more aggressive. Grab works but pickup zones are vaguer.

## Scam watch — what to ignore at both airports

**At BKK:** the "limo" desks inside arrivals quoting 1,000+ baht for trips that should be 350 baht. Walk past them, use the public taxi queue on Level 1 or take the Airport Rail Link.

**At DMK:** the same "limo" trick plus drivers who claim the meter is broken. Take a different taxi. The flat 50 baht airport surcharge + meter + tolls is the only legitimate fare structure.

**At both:** never take a taxi from someone who approaches you in arrivals. The official ranks are outside, ticket-machine queue.

## Which airport should you fly into?

  - **Full-service airlines (Thai, Singapore, ANA, etc.):** Suvarnabhumi — you don't have a choice anyway.

  - **Budget airlines (AirAsia, Nok, Lion, Scoot):** usually Don Mueang. The 200–500฿ saving on the fare is usually worth more than the extra 20 minutes of transfer hassle.

  - **Connecting between Bangkok flights:** never assume same airport. There's a free shuttle between BKK and DMK but it takes 60–90 minutes in traffic.

  - **Landing late at night:** BKK. The Airport Rail Link stops at midnight, but the taxi rank is staffed and orderly. DMK's taxi rank gets sketchier after midnight.

## What we'd do

BKK if the fare is similar — the Airport Rail Link alone justifies it. DMK only for genuine budget flights, and only with a Grab booked from the terminal lounge before walking out into the tout zone.
