# Cairo Airport taxi scams: the arrivals hall playbook

**The blunt answer:** Cairo Airport (CAI) is one of the most aggressive arrivals halls in the Middle East. The taxi mafia is real, Uber and Careem are the only reliable fixed-price options, and almost everyone offering "help" inside the terminal earns commission from somewhere. The trick is to know this in advance and act decisively from the second you exit immigration.

## The scams, in order of how often you'll see them

  - **The "limousine" desk.** Inside arrivals, official-looking counters offer "limousine" service for $40–$80 USD to central Cairo. The same trip on Uber is $8–$15. They're licensed; they're just expensive.

  - **The fake porter.** Someone in a uniform-ish shirt grabs your luggage off the belt or the cart "to help." Then asks for $20+ when you reach the kerb. Real porters wear marked uniforms and have a fixed tariff posted; only accept help from them.

  - **The white-taxi flag-down.** Drivers approach you in the terminal offering "cheap, cheap" rides. Once you're in the car, the meter is "broken" and the fare triples. Never accept a ride from anyone who approaches you inside.

  - **The "your driver is sick" routine.** If you booked a hotel transfer, scammers in arrivals sometimes hold up signs with common Western names and claim to be your driver. Verify on your phone before going anywhere.

  - **The currency-exchange split.** Booths inside the terminal offer rates 20–30% worse than the ATMs (which are 10 metres away). Use the ATM.

## What we'd do at CAI

Book a hotel transfer for the first night. It's $30 instead of $10, and on your first night in Cairo you don't want to be negotiating with a taxi at 2am. From night two onwards, use Uber or Careem — both work reliably, both have airport pickup zones, both bypass every scam above.

If you must take a white taxi: only from the official rank outside, only with the meter running from zero, and confirm the price in writing on your phone before you start driving.
