# Cancun Airport taxi scams: what travellers need to know before leaving arrivals

**The blunt answer:** Cancun Airport is one of the most aggressive arrivals halls in the world. Uber is technically allowed but officially discouraged, taxis are a fixed-price cartel, and the loudest people in arrivals are not taxi drivers — they're timeshare touts pretending to be tourist information. The cheapest legit exit is the **ADO bus**. Almost no first-time traveller knows about it.

## The four things you'll be sold inside CUN arrivals

  - **"Official" taxi vouchers** at counters in the arrivals hall — $60–$100 USD to the hotel zone. The taxi cartel sets fixed prices that are 3–4x the equivalent ADO bus fare.

  - **"Free transport to your hotel"** — almost always a timeshare presentation in disguise. You'll lose 90 minutes of your first day to a sales pitch.

  - **"Currency exchange"** at booths inside the terminal — rates 15–25% worse than ATMs once you're in the hotel zone.

  - **"Private transfer" pre-booked online** for $50–$80 — fine if you actually want a door-to-door service, but you can do the same thing for $12 with the ADO bus and a 5-minute taxi.

## The Uber situation, honestly

Uber operates at Cancun Airport but the local taxi unions don't like it. The official position keeps shifting, but in practice: Uber works, prices are reasonable, and drivers will tell you which exit to meet them at via the app. Just don't accept rides from anyone yelling "Uber" at you in arrivals — that's a normal taxi trying to charge you Uber prices.

## The ADO bus, because nobody tells you about it

ADO is Mexico's national bus company. Air-conditioned, comfortable, on schedule, runs every 30 minutes from outside Cancun Airport Terminals 2, 3 and 4 to downtown Cancun (~$5) and direct to Playa del Carmen (~$13). Tickets at the kiosks outside arrivals or via the ADO app. It's how locals leave the airport.

## What we'd do

Walk past every booth and lanyard-wearing "guide" in arrivals without making eye contact. Outside, either: (1) ADO bus to your nearest town then a 50-peso local taxi to your hotel, or (2) Uber from the designated pickup zone. Never pay $80 for a hotel zone transfer at the airport counter when the same trip is $25 on Uber.
