IST replaced Atatürk in 2019 and moved 45 km further from the city. The airport is huge and modern; the transfer options are decent but not obvious.

## HAVAIST bus

The city's official airport bus network. **The route you want for Sultanahmet is HVIST-12 to Sultanahmet** (75 TL) or HVIST-14 to Beyazıt-Sultanahmet. Every 30 min. Journey: 90 min in traffic, 60 off-peak.

## Metro (M11)

Runs from IST to Kağıthane, where you change to M7 to reach central. Total ~75 TL and 60–75 min to Taksim, then another connection to Sultanahmet. Cheap and reliable but multi-leg with luggage.

## Official taxi

From the marked rank outside arrivals. Metered. IST to Sultanahmet: **800–1,200 TL** depending on traffic and time of day. Tolls (~50 TL) added. Journey 45–75 min.

## BiTaksi / Uber

BiTaksi is the locals' app — it dispatches licensed yellow taxis. Uber operates in "Uber Taxi" mode (same yellow taxis). Prices are effectively the same as a rank taxi. Use it if you don't want to negotiate at the rank.

## The scam: "meter broken"

The classic Istanbul taxi scam is **"the meter is broken, 1500 lira flat"**. It's not broken. Insist on the meter or get out. See our full [Istanbul airport exit guide](/airports/ist-istanbul).

## Quick recommendation

- **Solo, light bag, budget:** Metro.

- **Family or lots of luggage:** Official taxi via BiTaksi.

- **Direct to Sultanahmet, comfortable seat:** HAVAIST HVIST-12.
