# Leaving Gatwick: train, taxi, Uber or coach into London in 2026

**The blunt answer:** take **Thameslink or Southern**. They cost roughly half of Gatwick Express, run almost as often, and stop at more useful stations (London Bridge, Blackfriars, St Pancras). Pay for Gatwick Express only if you're trying to make a tight train at Victoria.

## When to pick each option

**Anyone going to north or east London:** Thameslink. It runs through London Bridge, Farringdon, St Pancras and continues to Cambridge. No transfer needed for most central destinations.

**Anyone going to west or southwest London:** Southern to Victoria, then Tube. Cheaper than Gatwick Express, almost the same speed.

**Late-night arrivals:** trains run roughly 24/7 between Gatwick and London, but reduced frequency from ~1am. Uber and black cabs are the only reliable option between 2am and 4am.

**Heading to Heathrow:** there's no direct train. Easiest is Thameslink to Farringdon, then Elizabeth line. Or the National Express A3 coach (direct, ~90 min).

## Scam watch — what to actually ignore

Gatwick has fewer touts than Heathrow but they exist. Anyone offering you a ride inside arrivals is not the official rank. The licensed black cab and pre-booked taxi desks are clearly marked outside both terminals.

The ticket machines push Gatwick Express hard — the "fastest to London" sign is technically true but only saves a few minutes vs Thameslink. Buy Thameslink or Southern tickets at the same machines (look for "any permitted route" to Victoria/St Pancras).

## What we'd do

Walk to the train station inside the terminal (it's signposted from baggage claim), tap a contactless card on a Thameslink or Southern barrier, and read a book. You'll save £15 vs Gatwick Express and land at a more useful station for almost any London neighbourhood.
