**The blunt answer:** for most travellers, take the **Elizabeth line**. It's £12.80, runs every 4–8 minutes, and gets you to central London in roughly 30 minutes without anyone trying to sell you anything. Skip the Heathrow Express unless your employer is paying. Skip black cabs unless you have heavy luggage and three people splitting the fare.

## Cost and time at a glance

## When to pick each option

**Solo traveller with a backpack:** Piccadilly line. £5.60 and you'll be reading a book the whole way. It's slow but the cheapest legal way out of Heathrow.

**Couple or business traveller with carry-on:** Elizabeth line. The luggage racks are real, the carriages are wide, and Bond Street puts you in the middle of the city.

**Family with checked bags:** if you're four people going to a hotel, Uber XL or a black cab works out per-head similar to four Elizabeth line tickets, with zero transfers. Worth it.

**Landing after midnight:** the Elizabeth line and Piccadilly both stop. Night Tube returns on the Piccadilly from Friday to Sunday only. The N9 night bus runs to central London 24/7 for £1.75 — slow but it exists. Otherwise Uber.

**Heading to Paddington for a tight train connection:** Heathrow Express is the only time it's worth it. 15 minutes flat, no stops.

## Scam watch — what to actually ignore

Heathrow is one of the better-behaved big airports, but the touts inside arrivals are real. Anyone in a suit offering you a "chauffeur" or "premium taxi" inside the terminal is overcharging. The official black cab rank is outside, clearly signed, regulated, and metered. Use it or use an app — never a freelancer in arrivals.

Heathrow Express ticket machines aggressively upsell "first class." Don't bother — same seats, same train.

## What we'd do

Land, walk past everyone in arrivals, follow the purple Elizabeth line signs at any terminal, tap a contactless card at the gate, sit down. You'll be in central London before your bag straps stop sweating. The only reason to upgrade is a Paddington train at minute-zero, or a hotel in zone 3+ where a cab makes more sense than two transfers with luggage.
