## Why Heathrow wins

Heathrow has four ways into central London, three of them genuinely good. The Elizabeth line for most people, the Piccadilly for backpackers, the Heathrow Express for time-critical Paddington trips. The night bus exists. Uber and black cabs are everywhere. It's the only London airport where you can land at 3am and still have non-cab options.

## Why Gatwick is a close second

Gatwick's train station is literally inside the terminal. Thameslink and Southern both run roughly every 5–10 minutes and trains continue through the night at reduced frequency. The catch: Gatwick is 28 miles south of London, so even the fastest train is 30 minutes — vs 15 from Heathrow.

## Why Stansted is harder

Stansted is 40 miles north-east of London. The Stansted Express is the only fast option (47 min to Liverpool Street, £20+) but the coach is half the price and only adds 30–40 minutes. There's no nearby Tube station, so if you're not going to Liverpool Street or Victoria Coach Station, you'll transfer anyway.

## Why Luton is the hardest

Luton has the awkward two-step: a shuttle (DART) from the terminal to Luton Airport Parkway station, then Thameslink to central London. It's not difficult, but it adds a transfer with luggage that the other three airports don't have. The Green Line 757 coach is fine for budget travellers heading to Victoria.

## Which airport should you fly into?

  - **If you have a choice and you're paying:** Heathrow first, Gatwick second.

  - **If a budget airline is forcing your hand:** Stansted over Luton. The Stansted Express is more reliable than Luton's two-step shuttle.

  - **If you're landing in the middle of the night:** Heathrow. The other three force you into a coach or a £100+ taxi.

  - **If you're going to north London or Cambridge:** Stansted's coach lines and the Cambridge train are actually convenient.

## What we'd do

Heathrow if we have the choice. Gatwick if the price is right. We'd avoid Luton specifically when arriving late or with kids, and we'd avoid Stansted if our hotel isn't near Liverpool Street.
