# Medina airport (MED) to the Prophet's Mosque: taxi, Uber, and the Haramain train

## Distance and time

Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International (MED) is **~14 km** from Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque). Transit time:

- Taxi / Uber: 20–30 min off-peak, 45+ min around prayer times
- Haramain High Speed Rail (via Madinah station): not useful — the rail station is farther from the mosque than the airport

## Uber and Careem work — use them

Both **Uber and Careem** operate at MED with a designated pickup zone (a short walk from the arrivals exit, signposted). Fares to the Haram area:

- **Uber / Careem**: SAR 40–70 off-peak, up to SAR 120 during Umrah / Hajj / Ramadan surge
- **Airport taxi (metered)**: SAR 60–100
- **Airport taxi (flat quote from tout)**: SAR 150–300 — this is the scam

Always book via app during Umrah / Hajj peak — supply is tight but at least the fare is transparent.

## What to avoid

- Curbside 'taxi' touts quoting SAR 200+ 'because it's a holy city' — the meter is the meter
- Group vans that fill up 'in 5 minutes' but sit for 45 min waiting for a full load
- Paying in USD — always SAR, always with change verified

## Haramain train (if arriving from Mecca / Jeddah)

If your journey starts in Jeddah / KAIA (JED) or Mecca, the **Haramain High Speed Rail** to Madinah is spectacular — 2 hours from Mecca, 2.5 from JED. From Madinah rail station to the Haram, take a taxi (SAR 40–60) or Uber.

## Timing tip

Avoid arriving/departing during Fajr, Maghrib, or Isha — traffic near the Haram is bumper-to-bumper for 30 min around each prayer.
