# Should you take a taxi or Uber from the airport? A city-by-city rule of thumb

**The blunt answer:** the right choice depends on the city, not the app. Uber wins where local taxis are unregulated or scam-prone (Cancun, Cairo, Bangkok). Taxis win where they're properly regulated and ride-hail is restricted (Tokyo, Barcelona, parts of Germany). At a handful of airports, neither is the best — the train is.

## The actual rule of thumb

Three questions, in this order:

  - **Is there a direct train into the city?** If yes, use it. The train beats both taxis and Uber at most major airports.

  - **Are local taxis properly regulated and fixed-price?** If yes (Madrid, Barcelona, Tokyo, JFK), they're usually fine.

  - **Otherwise, use Uber / Bolt / Grab / Careem.** The in-app price protects you from every scam in arrivals.

## What we'd do

We default to the train when there is one. When there isn't, we default to the local ride-hailing app, because the price is fixed and the route is logged. We use airport taxis only where they're properly regulated, fixed-price, and clearly signed — that's a much smaller list of cities than the airport-taxi industry wants you to believe.
